The NEW Presidential Theme for 2022-23: Imagine Rotary

Incoming RI President Jennifer Jones imagines a Rotary where members act to make their dreams become reality and they make the most of their club experiences. She urges members to engage more with each other and use these connections to build partnerships that change the world.

Jennifer E. Jones, a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, has become Rotary International’s president for 2022-23, a groundbreaking selection that will make her the first woman to hold that office in the organization’s 115-year history.

“Imagine, a world that deserves our best,” Jones told incoming district governors on 20 January, “where we get up each day knowing that we can make a difference.”

 

ABOUT THE LOGO
The 2022-23 presidential theme logo was designed by renowned Australia-based Indigenous artist Riki Salam to represent RI President Jennifer Jones’ theme and initiatives.

The logo represents key elements of Rotary while honoring the Indigenous culture:
• The circle signifies connections to one another.
• The dots around the circle represent people, one for each of our areas of focus.
• The circle and the dots together become a navigation star, which signifies Rotary’s guiding light.
• The solid line underneath signifies a digging stick used for hard work —
a tool that Rotary’s people of action use to get things done.

Guest Speaker- Jo Baxter from Drug Free Australia

Club Meeting #1730

Thank you to our guest speaker Jo Baxter, from Drug Free Australia.
Jo is a former member of Rotary Club of Modbury and is currently on the board of the Rotary Action Group for Addiction Prevention. Her presentation tonight was about her work with DFA, an organisation that supports and educates young people, their families and communities to help prevent the use of illegal drugs and the illicit use of harmful substances.

 

 

Jo announced the launch of a new website by DFA ‘Save Your Brain’, an interactive online resource for Schools Years 5-12 about Drug Prevention and supports the mental health & wellbeing of youth. The launch coincides with the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking- 26th June 2022. The aim SYB is to change the culture that ‘drug use is normal’, young kids need to know that drug use is PREVENTABLE. The site is also available for parents, grandparents and the community in general to learn and develop strategies in stoping drug use in our children and hopefully prevent adult addiction.

She also shared some stories and books behind SYB, one in particular ‘Golden Haze’ which was originally supported by the former RC of Modbury.

Jo also talked about her involvement with the Rotary Action Group for Addiction Prevention. Founded in 2013 and recognised by Rotary International in 2016, which now operates in more than 42 countries ad 45 districts. It’s aim is to encourage all Rotarians to be active in the prevention of substance abuse and addiction, such as seeking out agencies that are working in prevention and support their projects in their local community.

Substances abuse and addiction of illicit drugs is a global problem and can only be addressed by the joint efforts of all worldwide organisations including governments.

Our last visit by DG Jeff Neale

Meeting #1729 Jeff and Jenny Neale with Dean & Allan

 

We welcomed DG Jeff and Jenny Neale to our meeting, and Jeff took the opportunity to reminisce on his year as DG of the new District 9510. The district comprises of 84 clubs and he and wife Jenny have travelled all year to get around all the clubs. Not a mean feat, and his experiences have been very encouraging. The main theme has been that Rotary needs to be fun, and the club memberships have varied from 3 members to 100 members, but it didn’t
matter how small some clubs were, they still made a great contribution to their communities.

He reported our Youth programs are still very strong in our district and well supported by our clubs.  As you know, RYLA is one of Rotary International’s foremost leadership development programs.  Unfortunately, the decision was made to cancel RYLA in April due to COVID restrictions.  The good news is that we have a strong team already planning for the RYLA in September this year.

The club of Holdfast Bay has a Biannual Food Drive, in conjunction with local businesses who donate the food. So far they have distributed $36000 worth of food this year, without any ex-pense to the club and without the need to raise
funds. “Great Project”.

The District Conference was also a great success. The Rotary International Convention will be held in Melbourne in late May 2023, this is a great opportunity to meet Rotarians from around the world.

Jeff also talked about his wife’s Jenny’s partner project this year is All Kids.  This project has been very well supported by the Rotary clubs in our district.  

This has been an amazing journey.  Jenny and I both agree that the best part of this role has been visiting the clubs and learning about the projects they are doing to support their communities.  

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge Jenny and thank her for all of the hard work that she has put in to this year.  Particularly for the wonderful support that she has provided me.  There is no way I could have completed this year without her by my side.  I would also like to thank David Fenton, who has been an amazing secretary, the members of the Board, the G-train and many of you sitting out in the audience today that have offered me support, encouragement and advice.  

We Thank Jeff & Jenny for their fabulous leadership and service for the past year and we hope to see them again soon.
