  • Post author:

At our regular dinner meeting on 14/11/17, we had an opportunity to meet the two students Imogen and Anthea, who will be sponsored by the Rotary Club of Modbury Golden Grove under two different Rotary Youth Programs.  They both have introduced themselves and briefly mentioned about their programs that they are participating. We are sure these students will be great representatives on behalf of the Club.

Imogen is the Club’s Long Term International Youth Exchange Student, who will be travelling to Denmark for 12 months next year.  Anthea, has been selected and sponsored by the Club to attend the National Youth Science Forum to be held for the first time in Brisbane in January 2018.

President Kevin thanking Raelene for her presentation

At our dinner meeting on 17th October Raelene Watts spoke to the Club about her newly formed charity, Sharing with Compassion, which she has created to raise funds for educating children in Uganda.

So far money has been raised to build a new girls dormitory at a secondary school in a very poor area on the outskirts of Kampala and now the charity is focusing on building a new primary school. This charity is tax deductible and every cent raised goes directly to the projects as it is run totally by dedicated volunteers.

Raelene showed us photos of the work that has been achieved and some of the children who are benefiting from this project.

At our meeting held on the 28/08/2017 at the Golden Grove Tavern, we were able to recognise and award three special youth representatives from our community.

Simon Awramenko is our sponsored outgoing student on the Rotary Exchange Program for 2018. He is going to Finland for the next 12 month, and will be a very good ambassador for our club and our community in general.

Amber Blakeley was our winner of the Good News Award for July 2017. Amber collected 145 warm jackets for homeless people to cope with the bitterly cold weather this winter. A great initiative – thank you Amber.

Basbibi Zaheer was our Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) representative. She is from Afghanistan and wants to work with displaced persons, and is currently working as a volunteer at the Australian Migrant Resource Centre.

Assistant Governor (Group 6), Peter Perkins and Club President Ron Kelley presented the three recipients to the meeting.
